How to play Space Marines
The toolbox faction: flexible, well-rounded, with no glaring holes. Builds for shooting, melee, mech, or elite infantry and adapts mid-game across 20+ detachments. The army you learn the game on and a perennial top-table contender on breadth.
Army rule: 11th's biggest uncertainty, so plan for both: either Combat Doctrines (toggle one of Devastator/Tactical/Assault per turn for a tempo cooldown) or Oath of Moment retained but nerfed (pick one enemy unit, re-roll Hit rolls against it). Either way, spend the cooldown on the kill that decides the turn, never on chaff.
Strengths
- Unmatched unit and detachment breadth; tune to almost any meta or matchup
- Durable statline plus excellent characters and leaders
- Deep mobility tech: Speeder ingress alphas, Deep Strike, and reactive moves
- Elite-veteran payloads (Terminators, Sternguard, Bladeguard) hit above their model count
Weaknesses
- Jack-of-all-trades; rarely the single most-efficient hammer or toughest body in any role
- Premium points cost; out-bodied by hordes and out-specialised by min-maxed lists
- New rules hurt staples: planes lost Hover, and cover no longer aids saves so AP bites harder
Signature combos
- Gladius Task Force as the flexible default, or Anvil Siege Force for a stationary gunline
- Fulguris/Skystrike Speeders for turn-1 ingress alpha strikes
- Librarius Conclave for army-wide psychic buffs
- 1st Company Task Force pairing elite veterans with a lasting mark-for-death
Gameplan
Win the mission, not the kill count. Use mobility and screens to dictate tempo, hold and contest objectives, and time the army rule to win the one decisive exchange each turn. Commit elites only to trades you have stacked in your favor.
Playing against Space Marines
Pressure multiple objectives so their flexibility can't cover everything, punish the points premium with chaff that dilutes a single-target army rule, and screen hard against turn-1 Speeder ingress and Deep Strike.
