How to play Chaos Knights
An elite, ultra-low-model-count vehicle skew: a handful of huge Chaos war machines, nimble War Dogs escorting big Knights. You win through raw quality, mobility, and a unique fear mechanic rather than bodies.
Army rule: Harbingers of Dread: a fear and morale package centered on Battle-shock. Your Knights project an aura penalizing nearby enemy Leadership/Battle-shock tests, and abilities punish or trigger off Battle-shocked enemies. Go wide with War Dogs to spread the aura and chip units below strength to force tests. (11th flag: the 'Darkness' option now grants Stealth instead of -1 to hit and was notably nerfed.)
Strengths
- Exceptional per-model quality and durability: high Toughness, big wound pools, 2+/invuln saves, cover plus AP-reduction
- Heavy long-range firepower and reliable melee on the same chassis, with character-Knights able to snipe key targets
- Genuinely fast, flexible War Dogs that thrive in a fast-moving edition
- Unique disruption forcing Battle-shock and leadership penalties, especially via the Abominant
Weaknesses
- Very low model count; few activations mean you are out-actioned and swarmed off objectives
- Poor at secondary and mission scoring and at actions
- Objective control is a historical hole that the cultist/ally detachment exists to plug
- One bad trade or bracketed Knight is a huge chunk of the army, and the rule is in a nerfed state
Signature combos
- A big Knight aura over a wide screen of clustered War Dogs
- Knight Abominant forcing out-of-sequence Battle-shock at 24 inches into 'punish the shocked' payoffs
- War Dog Executioner long-range fire support with Ignores Cover
- Souped-in cultists or Damned in Iconoclast Fiefdom to actually hold objectives
Gameplan
Deploy War Dogs ahead of one or two big Knights, push midboard to blanket enemies in the dread aura, and use long-range guns plus the Abominant to chip units below strength and force Battle-shock. Out-trade and out-kill on quality while cheap souped-in bodies hold objectives.
Playing against Chaos Knights
Bring chaff to flood the board and out-action their few models, pack reliable high-AP or mortal-wound output to kill a whole Knight rather than chip several, and keep units above starting strength to deny Battle-shock procs.
